Los Zetas 90mm High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) Round Cache Recovered in El Congo, El Salvador (Archival)

C/O Futures Cartel Research Note Series

10 May 2022

This note focuses upon an archival incident showing the extent to which Los Zetas cartel was able to procure high end military anti-armor munitions. These munitions, initially belonging to the Salvadoran army, were provided to Los Zetas via the Cartel de Texis who were working in cooperation with corrupt military/ex-military officers and/or governmental officials. The incident dating from October 2013 has a key element misidentified with the 90mm HEAT rounds that were recovered designated as ‘anti-tank grenades.’[1] Such misidentification of cartel weaponry in news reports, and even governmental documents, is not uncommon.
