A new drug called Bombé (meaning ‘powerful’ in Lingala) has proliferated in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since mid-2021. The drug is associated with the powdered residue of ground up catalytic converter components—specifically, the ceramic honeycombed interiors covered with rare metals—which have then been mixed with various narcotics. Depending on the formulation, this cheap drug can typically be smoked or snorted. Bombé results in a zombie-like high taking effect, where the users have been known to fall into a deep sleep while remaining upright...
