On 6 February 2023, Brandon Russell, the founder of the Atomwaffen Division (AWD), and his girlfriend and co-conspirator Sarah Clendaniel were charged with the Federal criminal complaint of conspiring to destroy an energy facility. The two neo-Nazis were plotting to target five power substations supplying energy to the city of Baltimore, Maryland in order to “create ‘a cascading failure’ in the system” in hopes of facilitating a race war.
